Copenhagen: The Little Mermaid

Visitors to Copenhagen will find a charming modern city with a fascinating historical past. The Danish city was founded in the 12th century by Archbishop Absalon as a major trading center. The city continues to be one of Europe's most important trading centers but is also a wonderful place for a holiday.

Hans Christian Anderson, the famous author of The Little Mermaid, spent most of his life in the city. Den Li Havrue, or The Little Mermaid, has been immortalized by the city in a large bronze statue situated at the entrance to the Copenhagen harbor. Dedicated in 1913, the statue has been subjected to vandalism several times but each time it is repaired and continues welcome visitors to the city.

Tourists in Copenhagen can learn much about the life Hans Christian Anderson. Several of his homes are now tourist attractions as is his tomb. Many samples of his writing and other memorabilia are displayed at local museums throughout the city.

Copenhagen is also world famous for the Tivoli Gardens. Part amusement park and part beer garden, the Tivoli Gardens opened to visitors in 1843. Children will love the carnival rides and games during the day, especially the merry go round with Viking ships in place of horses. A night the Tivoli Gardens become a hot spot for teens and adults. Bars, cafes, and nightclubs open and visitors and locals will both find delicious dining and great entertainment under the sparkling lights of the Garden.
